Solid State
A solid is matter in which the forces between the particles are strong enough and are very close together and might vibrate slightly but, cannot move around freely. A solid is characterized by structural rigidity and resistance to change of shape or volume. Solids can only change shape under force, as when broken or cut. Solids are firm and stable just like your desk, ice, rocks, wood, etc.
Phases
There are phases solids go through to turn into other state of matter. For example, when a solid sublimates it converts into gas. And when a solid melts it converts to liquid.
Vocabulary List
- Sublimation- transition from the solid phase to the gas phase without passing through liquid phase.
- Rigid- firmly fixed or set.
- Particles- a minute portion of matter.
